Submission: Cobham Dr (Normandy Ave to Tristram St) Speed Limit Consultation

The submission opportunity from the Hamilton City Council is asking whether the current speed limit, which applies to the stretch of road between Tristram Street and Normandy Ave, should be retained or reverted back to the pre-July 2023 limit of 80km/h.

We made this submission to Hamilton City Council on 20 April 2025.

Our key positions:

  • Higher speeds increase the severity of accidents when they occur. This stretch of Cobham Drive has multiple hazards; a blind corner, pedestrian flows at both ends, and a footpath runs alongside the road at one point. People’s lives shouldn’t be put at risk.
  • There is minimal time saving to be made by increasing the speed for 1.17 kilometers of road and would require mitigation and layout changes, such as removing the corners or footpaths, that is not possible.
  • There has been a 70% reduction in crashes since the speed limit was dropped. This statistic comes from the city council.
  • Hamilton City Council should be making decisions about our city based on what’s best for our residents and best international practice.
