Submission: Setting of Speed Limits Rule 2024
The Setting of Speed Limits Rule outlines the policy that RCAs (Road Controlling Authorities) must follow when setting speed limits on roads they control. This Rule proposes to increase speed limits where speed limits were recently lowered, which is likely to result in increased serious injury and death, especially for vulnerable road users, including people riding bikes.
We made this submission to the Ministry of Transport on 4 July 2024.
Our key positions:
- We do not support the reversal of speed limits, including outside school gates, due to significant risk of serious injury and death.
- The proposed Rule dismisses the needs and wants of the community (by reopening consultation into already settled matters).
- The proposed Rule is likely to make the road environment less safe and inviting for people on bikes.
- The Rule lacks an evidence-based approach which is likely to lead to further injury and death and less travel time reliability.
