Bike Waikato Annual General Meeting
It’s that time of year again, folks! We will be holding our AGM on Sunday 1st of October from 2pm – 4pm at Go Eco in Frankton. We will provide pizza and drinks, and we will discuss what we have achieved this year and elect a new committee.
If you’re interested in being a part of what we do, email your nomination to [email protected].
Find the materials for the AGM, including the Chairperson’s and Treasurer’s Reports, here. If you’re unable to open the link, please email us and we can send the materials directly to you.
Date: 1st October 2023
Time: 2pm – 4pm
Venue: Go Eco (188 Commerce Street, Frankton)
Joining the Bike Waikato committee is a great opportunity to get involved in the beating pulse of cycling in the Waikato – but you don’t need to be an engineer or a great public speaker. We have roles for people to manage communications, realise membership benefits, and organise community events. If you’re keen to get more people on bikes safely, then we’re keen to hear from you!
CERF Update
On September 21, the final seven CERF (Climate Emergency Response Fund) projects were approved at Hamilton City Council’s Transport and Infrastructure Committee meeting, which means the full suite of projects is now going ahead.
The motion to overturn the protected cycleway and in-lane bus stop in Horsham Downs was also rejected, which means that this project is continuing as planned.
Come June 2024, we are going to have 29 new cycling, public transport, and end-of-trip facilities in Hamilton. That is only nine months from now! Shovels are already in the ground for projects earlier approved, and many more will get on their way as we move into summer. This proves that Hamilton City Council can move at pace for cycling improvements when push comes to shove.
We want to extend a massive thank you and congratulations to everyone who helped us to make this happen. Feedback from staff and elected members was that the strong support from the community helped to apply political pressure to get these across the line.
This is an absolute win for cycling in Hamilton.
World Car Free Day
The excitement does not end there – Bike Waikato and friends celebrated World Car Free Day during the Council deliberations. Worley Place outside Hamilton City Council was closed to motor vehicles for the day, there were goodies and prizes available, as well as information about our growing bicycle network and the various public transport services.
Our installation was focused on demonstrating the massive size difference between a typical bicycle and a typical car – especially important to remember when both can achieve most everyday tasks, but we have “no room for bikes”. This sparked a lot of interesting discussions with the public.
Our installation was even featured by the Waikato Times, promoting the bicycle as a genuine mode choice for everyday trips.
