Welcome to our new members!

Welcome to the new members of Bike Waikato who joined us over Biktober. Your support helps us to host our website, pay volunteers, and put on events for the cycling community in the Waikato.

If you are still interested in becoming a member, you can do so at any time via our website at https://bikewaikato.org.nz/get-involved/#membership.

We are trying to build a good membership base so we can start offering tangible benefits to financial members of Bike Waikato.

Call for Volunteers: CHRISTMAS PARADE!

Bike Waikato has joined the First Credit Union Christmas Parade!

The parade is on 8 December 2024 starting from Anglesea Street, Hamilton at 2pm.

We are entering with a bike flotilla. We will be showing a range of bikes, trikes, cargo bikes, kids and cargo bikes, and recumbents that are used to get around our great city. We would like you to join our awesome float and take part in the festivities.

See more information and sign up on our website at https://bikewaikato.org.nz/christmas-parade/.

A Pause for Bikes on Buses

Waka Kotahi has recently issued a safety warning regarding bike racks on the front of the buses. The racks obscure the headlights which presents a safety risk to passengers on the bus. Resultantly, many operators have temporarily banned the use of bike racks.

What does this mean for you?

In the Waikato, the use of all bike racks on public buses has been withdrawn since Saturday 9 November 2024. You can read more about the notice on Busit at https://www.busit.co.nz/travelling-with-us/bike-racks/.

We accept the legitimate safety risks posed by the current bike racks, but it is not acceptable for a critical last-mile part of our transport system to become inaccessible with no alternatives.

Bike Waikato are reaching out to the Waikato Regional Council, who operates the public bus services in the Waikato, about intermediate measures that can keep our transport system accessible.

An Invitation to the Hiikoi (14 November 2024)

The nationwide hiikoi protesting the anti-Maaori policies of the Government is making its way through Kirikiririoa this Thursday. A bike ride will be part of the hiikoi, and you are invited to take part.

The ride will leave from Ngaruawahia by 8am on Thursday 14 November 2024, and the ride will end at FMG Stadium on Mill Street. From there, you will be able to walk to Garden Place1.

Bike Waikato will support the hiikoi with our free Bike Valet service. We will look after your bikes at FMG Stadium to give you peace of mind while you join the rest of the hiikoi.

1A previous version of this article stated that the hiikoi would continue to Hamilton Gardens. This is incorrect. The hiikoi will meet at Garden Place.
