Next month is Bike Month
Bike Month is an annual celebration of cycling held in February each year, with biking-related events run by a range of Waikato organisations including Bike Waikato, Hamilton City Council and Go Eco. Explore Kirikiriroa in one of the group rides, park your bike with us valet-style, and track your rides online across the Waikato.
There is still a lot more to be announced, but we have included some key events and initiatives below.
You can find more about Bike Month and view its growing list of events here.
Aotearoa Bike Challenge
The Aotearoa Bike Challenge (ABC) is New Zealand’s biggest month-long bike event, it brings together riders of every level to promote the benefits of bike riding. The challenge is delivered by Love to Ride, behaviour change experts with over a decade of experience running bike riding campaigns.
Throughout February, riders from across the country will head out on their bikes and ride as individuals or with their workplaces to top leader boards and win prizes.
We want to see what we can achieve as a community. If you want to take part, you can join Bike Waikato’s group and register for the challenge here.
Bike Friendly Business Awards
In celebration of Bike Month 2023, Bike Waikato is hosting its first ever Bike Friendly Business Awards. We want to hear your thoughts on what makes a business “bike friendly” and hope to recognise the local businesses that are the friendliest to people on bikes.
Click here to have your say. Nominations close mid-February, after which a final round of voting will open for the top businesses.
Boon Art Bike Tours
Our popular Boon Art Bike Tours are back for 2023 with plenty of new artwork to check out!
Bike Waikato are leading two group rides through Hamilton Central (Tuesday 7 February) and Frankton/Dinsdale (Saturday 18 February) to showcase the awesome street art that Hamilton Kirikiriroa has to offer.
The tours will be guided by representatives from Bike Waikato, with stops along the way to talk about the street art and grab a selfie or two. Both rides will be at a leisurely pace mixing on-road and off-road riding.
Numbers are limited, so please make sure that you register to reserve your spot.
Go Eco’s Bike Hub ABC Workshops
Go Eco’s Bike Hub – Air, Brake, and Chain (ABC) workshops are designed to give the skills needed to keep your own, and other’s bikes safe on the road.
The workshops will run throughout February, 10-12pm on Sunday the 12th, 19th and 26th of February.
Big Bike Film Night
The Big Bike Film Night is riding into town on a mission to bring the best cycling short films from around the world together for you.
Showcasing their 2023 collection, it has everything a cycling-centric audience could want- action, drama, humour, and plenty of inspiration; the evening is going to be unashamedly, and utterly aimed at the two-wheel devotee.
Tickets and more information on the Big Bike Film Night can be found here.
