Submissions Update
Previously, we submitted to the Government Policy Statement (GPS) on Land Transport and the Hamilton City Long Term Plan 2024-34. We can now provide an update on the outcome of those consultations.
Unfortunately, the final GPS, which set out to significantly reduce spending for cycling and safety improvement infrastructure, is broadly unchanged from the draft version except for changes that allow already consented cycling and walking projects to continue and decreasing the funding ranges for walking and cycling infrastructure from $70-$130M (draft) to $75-$110M.
With regards to the Long Term Plan, the long-awaited cycling bridge has been cancelled.
Our other recent submission have been:
- Setting of Speed Limits Rule 2024 – Ministry of Transport
- (Upcoming) Second Emissions Reduction Plan – Ministry for the Environment
Some Good News – Changes at Rifle Range Road, Claudelands Park, and Bryce St
We have heard through the grapevine, and seen for ourselves, that upgrades are nearly complete at Rifle Range Road, and other upgrades have been completed around Claudelands Park: separated bike lanes have been installed on both Heaphy Tce and Rifle Range Road, improving access and safety for people riding bikes. A large shared path from Heaphy Tce through to Brooklyn Rd is now present in Claudelands adjacent to the Magical Playground.
Additionally, we have seen that as a result of the works to strengthen Bryce St bank parallel to the train lines, the city has netted a shared path for cycling and walking. This provides an alternative routing option coming up from or entering the Western Rail Trail into the city centre.
Give these a ride if you can, and let us know your thoughts!
